A Brand New Sega Genesis Game Gets Released in 2018

Dust off your Sega Genesis as a brand new game has been developed for this iconic game system! Yes, you heard me right, I said a "new" game. Tanglewood is a successfully crowd-funded video game, by game developer Matt Phillips. What makes the homebrew special? Not only has Tanglewood been coded with the very same, old-fashioned hardware, and programming language, as it was done some 20 years ago! But, it has also been produced in a cartridge form complete with a Mega Drive/Genesis style box just like in the 90's!

An Interview with BBC tells the challenges Matt faced in creating a new Mega Drive/Genesis game today. Matt's childhood passion was instrumental in seeing this ambitious project through, and now with the finished product is his hands, no doubt, must feel outstanding!

Now, about the game!

From the site:

TANGLEWOOD® is a brand new and original game for the SEGA Mega Drive, to be released on physical cartridge in spring 2018.

Set in the realm of Tanglewood, the game follows a young creature, Nymn, separated from the pack after the sun sets. Unable to get back to the safety of the family's underground home, Nymn must find a way to survive the night terrors and get to morning. TANGLEWOOD’s world is a dangerous one after dark; guiding Nymn you must use your skills of evasion, traps, and trickery to defeat predators.

TANGLEWOOD is a platforming game with puzzle elements and can be described as a mix of the Mega Drive titles Another World and The Lion King.

In the BBC interview, Matt said he did approach Sega to get official backing, but unfortunately, Sega responded to Matt stating that the resources were no longer available to test the game properly. They did, however, wished him luck on the project. This is so neat to see done today and shows that old can be new again. Head over to tanglewoodgame.com for more info.
