Here We Go Again - SNES Classic On the Way!

June 26, 2017

Well, it was rumored for months and now its official. Nintendo has announced that it will be releasing a classic mini edition of the Super Nintendo. The release date is scheduled for Sept 29th.

Ok, guys, I've got mixed feelings about this. We all know the NES classic fiasco that took place starting off the holiday season last year. Small production numbers made it nearly impossible to find then, of course, the scalpers, who were charging prices, in some cases, that exceeded the cost of purchasing an original 1985 game console! Nintendo's track record on releasing new products and fulfilling demand has been pretty weak. So will we see a repeat performance? We will wait and see. But already looking on eBay, the NES Classic is priced at about $275. Ouch! This hike, of course, is partly due to the sudden discontinuation of the unit back in April.

Many are still recovering from that inexplicable move on Nintendos part. Why discontinue something that obviously was in high demand? Now they shove the new Snes Classic at us and like a Jedi mind trick saying" that's not the classic system you're looking for." C'mon Nintendo! At least reissue the NES Classic for those who missed it!

Now, am I excited about the SNES Classic? Yes. Will I be purchasing one? Well, if I see it at the store while causally shopping, perhaps. But I will not preorder or wait in some long line at 4 am in the morning to only fuel this horrible Nintendo cycle yet again. Besides, I already have a Super Nintendo, and I don't have to wait for another since mine works just fine, thank you.

Games that are to be on the Super Nintendo Classic -

Contra III: The Alien Wars™

Donkey Kong Country™

EarthBound™

Final Fantasy III

F-ZERO™

Kirby™ Super Star

Kirby’s Dream Course™

The Legend of Zelda™: A Link to the Past™

Mega Man® X

Secret of Mana

Star Fox™

Star Fox™ 2

Street Fighter® II Turbo: Hyper Fighting

Super Castlevania IV™

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts®

Super Mario Kart™

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars™

Super Mario World™

All 5-star games in my opinion, plus we get a previously unreleased game, Star Fox 2 which is unlocked by passing the first level on Star Fox 1 according to Nintendo.

But what about those who just bought the Switch? Many bought the Switch hoping that Nintendo's upcoming virtual console will give access to all these great retro games. There is an apparent overlap here with Nintendo's product line-up. Poor marketing or a deliberate strategy? What do you think?

Anyway, I'm for one happy to see Nintendo alive and kicking. The Super Nintendo Classic will retail for $79.99 and this time included not one but two controllers.
